Set Alert Actions

Use this window to determine how the person responsible for managing the system is to be notified if there is a warning or critical or failure alert.

NOTE: This help page may include information about services or operating systems that are not supported by your system. See the Software Support Matrix for the latest information about supported services and software.
NOTE: Due to the limitations of the operating system (for example, VMware ESXi) or your system hardware, the Setting Alert Actions feature is not available with this release of Server Administrator.

You can set alert actions because Server Administrator allows you to decide before an event occurs how you want to notify the persons responsible for managing the system that a significant event has occurred.

Event Types for setting Alert Actions

For an in-depth explanation of the terminology that is used in classifying events that affect system components, see Event Type Definitions and Component Health. Click here for specific information about Setting Alert Actions for systems running the Linux operating system.

When you click the Alert Management tab and the Alert Actions subtab for any component, you can view the Alert Actions dialog box. The Alert Actions dialog box displays any alert actions that may have already been configured for an event. The available alert actions are the same for all events that you can configure. You can cause a message to be displayed on a console screen, broadcast an alert dialog box that displays on the consoles of certain users with drives that are mapped to the system, or run an application program that intervenes or takes some other action in response to the event.

If you are logged in to Server Administrator as a power user or administrator, the Alert Actions subtab is available in several locations. For a summary of all the alert actions you can set for components, perform the following steps:

  1. Select System from the System Tree in the Server Administrator home page (the home page is the window that appears first when you log in to Server Administrator).
  2. Under the Alert Management tab, click the Alert Actions subtab. The Alert Actions window appears, listing all the event types and components for which you can configure alert actions.
  3. Click any underlined item under the Event field. Another window appears called the Set Alert Actions for <Event Name>; for example, Set Alert Actions for Power Supply Critical.

The table below summarizes the windows in Server Administrator where you can access Alert Actions for various event types.

NOTE: Events for components that are not present on your system do not appear. The list of events below covers possible configurations.

Defining Alert Action

An alert action is an action that you can specify for your system to take when specified conditions are met. For example, if a fan probe on your system reads a fan RPM of 300, and if your minimum warning threshold value for that fan probe is 600 RPM, then your system generates a fan probe warning. Alert action settings determine how persons are notified of this event. For temperature and voltage probe readings that fall within the warning or failure range, you can also configure alert actions.

Selecting Alert Actions

When a warning or critical or failure event occurs, Server Administrator offers several ways to alert the persons responsible for monitoring and managing your system. Each configurable component has a Set Alert Actions for window. You can select more than one action for each event type, such as voltage failure, memory prefailure, or chassis intrusion. Click the check box for each action that you want to enable for a given event type.

When you install Server Administrator, all alert actions are disabled by default. A power user or administrator can enable selected actions.

Display an alert message on the server Enables your system's console alert. When enabled, the monitor that is attached to the system from which you are running Server Administrator displays a visual alert message.
Broadcast a message Enables an alert message to be broadcast to certain users. On systems running supported Microsoft Windows operating systems, an alert message is broadcast to all users that have an active Terminal (or Remote Desktop) session. Click OK to dismiss the alert. On systems running a supported Linux operating system, an alert message is broadcast only to operators that have an active shell on the local system.
NOTE: When Server Administrator is installed on a system running the Microsoft Windows operating system, the broadcast message alert is sent to all active Terminal (or Remote Desktop) sessions including the console session.
Execute application Executes an application program. You must supply the name of the executable and its fully qualified path on your system. When enabled, Server Administrator executes the program that you specify to diagnose, solve, or otherwise intervene and take corrective action. An example application is a program that pages persons responsible for administering the system.
NOTE: Only an Administrator can view and manage the Execute application option.
NOTE: On systems running a supported Linux operating system, when a normal user is elevated to an administrator, the Execute application option is not available.
Absolute path to the application Enter the valid fully qualified path and filename of the application that you want to execute if there is an event for the component that is described in this window.
NOTE: On systems running a supported Linux operating system, Server Administrator does not allow absolute path to application files that are world-writable.
NOTE:  Click here for more information about setting alert actions and some restrictions on setting alert actions.
